Bad strategic choices are realistic. Look at Pilgrimage of Grace

Those bastards had Henry VIII by the balls. They caught him defenseless with not enough troops to counter in the 1530s Then they stupidlly allowed Henry's envoy to woo them with promises of safe passage and pardons, if only theier leaders would agree to disband thier troops and parlay with the king in london. Once they did that, henry set all type of pretexts that allowed him to ruthlessly liquidate the leaders
